Sunday 13th Oct, saw round 2 of the Ulster cyclocross series in Lady Dixon’s park, Belfast. Phoenix CC played host to the race, sponsored by McConvey cycles and supported by Belfast city council parks. Over 300 racers of all ages signed on for a full program of races. The dry and sunny autumnal conditions where perfect for spectators who turned out in big numbers to support the racing.
First up was the kids races. Highlights for Phoenix where Shea O’Kane who took a fine 3nd place in U10 and Daire O’Gorman who placed 2nd in his first ever race at U6 level. Well done to both and all the Phoenix kids who took part.
In the MTB and B-races, Phoenix had strong presence. In the Womens race, Claire Oakley took first with Gill Smith (Phoenix) second and Lisa Millar third. Congratulations to Gill.
Top of the bill was the A-race and while current national champion Roger Aiken was not able to ride due to work commitments, a strong field lined up. Robin Seymour, 18-time CX champion, took the win from team mate Evan Ryan with Tim O’Regan taking 3rd. XMTB’s Matt Adair missed out on podium after mechanical in last lap. Disappointing for Matt, who had a fine race demonstrating his off-road skill to leap the steps going uphill!
Jason Henry and Johnny McCabe where first unplaced vet and super-vet respectively. Rory Maguire was first Phoenix rider home and first unplaced junior. An impressive result against a quality field in only his 2nd race.
Many thanks to all who turned out to support the racing, special thanks to Belfast Parks for letting club put on the event.
