Ulster CX round 3 – Windmill park, Dungannon

What a difference a week makes.  Heavy rain for a number of days prior to round 3 of the 2013 Ulster cyclocross series meant one thing.  Mud.  The racing was hosted by Island Wheelers who had laid out a challenging course around Windmill Park Dungannon.

Luckily the kids races ran in relative dryness and Phoenix’s Shea O’Kane demonstrated his consistency with his 3rd podium in 3 races.  Moya O’Kane just missed out on 3rd place.  Well done to both O’Kanes.

The MTB support race saw biggest field of the day and Jim Hergarty put in a fine ride to finish halfway down field.  In the B-race, Olan Byrne, David Maitland and David Steward weren’t going to be put off by conditions and all raced good hard races.

Phoenix result of the day went to Gill Smith who took the win in the women’s race.  Well done Gill – you made it look easy !

And finally to the A-race. With the course nicely cut up, the rain started up just in time for start.  It was a war of attrition as many riders took falls, the exception being the imperious Roger Aiken who took a fine win with rising junior star David Montgomery second and Glen Kinning making up the podium.  Jason Henry again was first unplaced vet, home in fourth place.  For second week running Rory Maguire was seventh, first Phoenix man and took the the unplaced junior prize.  Alex Donald  finished a wheel behind, with John Bogues in 9th, first supervet.
