The 6th round of Ulster Cyclocross series was run in Ormeau park, hosted by Xmtb McConvey cycles. What a difference a little rain can make. Reports from Sat where of a firm, fast flowing course. By the time the A-race started, it was a combination of deep thick mud, exposed roots and what can only be described as mud soup. Nevertheless, this did not deter a large number of Phoenix riders to get out there and enjoy the day.
It was a cool morning for kids and youth races and there was persistent rain and drizzle. The course was probably most challenging of the series so far as it took in first few sections of the adult course. Like the senior races there were mechanical’s, spills and plenty of mud.
The riders where U6 – Daire O’Gorman, Olivia Orr; U10 – Shea O’Kane, Ryan Stewart, Fionnuala O’Gorman; U12 – Anna Mae Samuel, Calum Stewart, Eoin O’Gorman. The top results where Daire who was first in the U6, Shea third in the always competitive U10 boys, and Anna Mae who placed 4th in U10 girls. But every single one of our kids should be very proud of their performances. Everyone raced hard battling for every position. Grit and determination shown by all, very impressive.
A big turnout in both CX races, most of the usual faces and a few riding first ‘cross race of the season. This was tough racing for all and unfortunately the conditions led to quite a few DNF’s and broken rear mech’s. Gil Smith came 3rd in women’s race. In B-race Olan Byrne came in 31st, David Maitland 35th, David Steward 37th, Gareth Osborne 38th.
John Bogues was top Phoenix rider in A race, 7th overall and first unplaced super vet. Luke Ireland showed his form is returning coming in 11th. Other results – Cathal smith 16th, Phil O’Neil 19th, Joe Henry 20th, Ali McAuley 21st and Ed Boyle 23rd.
